“You don’t get what you wish for, you get what you work for” is a slogan that Blayre Turnbull has long professed. And it’s gotten her to the top of the hockey world. A bona fide leader, she’s frequently worn the “C” on her jersey, including for Team Nova Scotia at the 2011 Canada Winter Games, the University of Wisconsin Badgers in her senior year and Toronto’s PWHL squad for the past two years. Turnbull is part of hockey history as one of the original six captains in the exciting – and long overdue – PWHL. Her introduction came at Nathan Phillips Square in front of the iconic TORONTO sign as skaters on the City Hall rink added to the magical moment. A few days later – January 1, 2024 – Turnbull led her team to the ice in the first-ever PWHL game as dream became reality. Year 2 sees Toronto known as the Sceptres, with Turnbull once more providing her strong two-way play at forward along with her leadership. She began skating at the age of two and first played hockey three years later. Seeing Canada’s women win Gold at the 2002 Olympic Games at Salt Lake City inspired her Olympic quest. Turnbull got there in 2018 when Canada took Silver at PyeongChang and she was an assistant captain four years later when Canada won Gold at the Beijing Olympics. Her medals collection also includes seven IIHF Women’s World Championship medals, three of them Gold, plus two Clarkson Cup championships with the CWHL’s Calgary Inferno. What’s more, Turnbull is married to Ryan Sommer who took home Olympic Bronze in the four-man bobsleigh event at Beijing!
